Foxes win Abrey Cup

Playing against a very strong Sudbury side our Foxes Section won the Abrey Cup at Wyke Green in the final. The trophy was presented to Stan Carter, our proud non-playing captain who had orchestrated his team through each stage of the competition.

This competition is an annual event held since 1954, under the organisation of the Middlesex County Golf Association. It comprises teams of 9, playing each other in a singles knock-out format, with every round being played on a neutral ground. Since its conception we have been winners 11 times, second only to Ealing.

In the final all the players were stars, but a special mention goes to Dave Drake who found himself in the unenviable position of going down the 19th hole to decide the result. With a large gallery holding their breath Dave showed his steel. He played first from the fairway and hit the heart of the green. His worthy opponent played next from 20 yards further on, but hit the left hand bunker pin high. Under tremendous pressure in the rear of the trap he was unable to make par. A tremendous roar went up from relieved Pinner supporters when Dave finally putted out to end the tension.

With a membership of around 175 the Foxes section offers a full programme of golf and social events for those with handicaps of 9 to 19.

The golfing year opens with the 4 Club cup, a fun stableford competition which makes us realise that we usually carry too many clubs! Home and away fixtures with 10 other clubs occur from April to October alongside a number of section competitions which culminate in the presentation of silverware at the AGM in October. Pinner Hill’s Foxes also regularly participate in The Middlesex County Foxes Championship, The Foxes Festival, the Foxes Millennium Trophy and the Abrey Cup which is the blue riband knockout competition in Middlesex.

Although competitive, the golf has a strong social element for both the annual awayday and the weekend away when parties of 20 or more visit other courses in the South East of England and occasionally in France.

The highlight of the section’s social calendar is the Foxes Ladies Night which is a dinner and dance held in October and there is always a strong contingent of Foxes at the Club’s social events.
